Threads Character Limit: How Long Can a Post Be?

Short answer: a Threads post can be up to 500 characters. That is the limit for the main text of one post. Here is the full picture, including the parts most people get wrong.

The 500-character limit

Every standard Threads post caps at 500 characters. That is for the text only. Photos, videos, and links do not count against it, so a post with a link still gets the full 500 characters of writing.

For comparison, that is well over the 280 characters you get on X. It is enough for a real thought, but tight enough that you still have to be clear. Lead with your point, since the first line is what shows in the preview.

The 10,000-character text attachment

In 2025 Threads added a longer-form option. You can attach a block of up to 10,000 characters that appears as a separate, expandable section under your post. It does not count toward the 500, and it is free, unlike the long posts on X that need a paid subscription. It is handy when you want a short hook up top and the full story for people who tap in.

Photos, videos, and bio

  • Photos: up to 10 in one carousel.
  • Video: up to 5 minutes per post.
  • Carousels: you can mix photos and video in the same post.
  • Bio: your Threads bio comes from Instagram and is limited to 150 characters.

How to say more than 500 characters

If 500 is not enough, you have two clean options. Add the 10,000-character text attachment for the long version, or make a thread: post your first part, then reply to your own post to add the next, and keep going. Our guide on how to use Threads walks through making a thread step by step.

Either way, write the first 500 characters like they are the only thing people will read, because for many of them, they are. When you are ready to plan posts ahead of time, a Threads scheduler lets you write a week at once.
